This reminds me off when I used to play The Sims and used the 'rosebud' and 'motherlode' cheat codes to get instant cash and build the biggest, best and most perfect houses. It ruined the game for me. Before the cheats I actually enjoyed it then it got boring and repetitve and I gave up. I can imagine that the story would be the same here.

Not only is buying gold cheating, but it is 50% of the bot problem most of us love so much to bitch about. Bots are the way gold and items are farmed and sold. Bots take a portion of the drops that legitimate players could be getting thereby reducing what we could be making. People who buy from these cheaters support this problem. If people didn't buy from gold farmers there would be more drops for the rest of us and the "average" player would have a less difficult time gaining wealth. Bots not only reduce the loot available to all but this type of gold influx causes price inflation making rarer items more difficult for people to buy items at a reasonalbe price.

From an ethical point of view it can be seen either way:
1) It encourages the exploitation of chinese kids who farm the gold or
2) It generates employment for some chinese kids.
Yeah I remember that article a guy posted about that too. And for me, this is hypocritical. Yes, chinese farmers are underpaid, exploited, etc... such as any worker (well, most of them) in China. A waitor in a restaurant earns 30 euros a month... So you can reproach a lot of things to gold sellers, but concerning their employees, they're just as bad as the company that made the clothe you're wearing. Not better, not worst.

Thanks to the person who quoted the EULA. I have never heard of people being banned for having bought gold, nor even ANET looking for them. I was wondering if such thing happened.

And yeah, buying gold is bad, shame on you, blah, blah... Actually, I dont really care.

So the service agreement says that you can't sell but there is nothing about buying in there which means to me that selling is cheating and buying is not. It seems like more of a public relations clause than one with serious intent as a power seller for real money will simply buy another account if he/she gets banned on an existing one.

I started MMPORGs (yes I know GW isn't technically one but it's in the same realm so please work with me) in UO so I'm probably bias towards the 'anything is for sale if somebody is willing to pay for it'. UO also had significantly unfair advantages betwen part time and full time players so the only way a part time player could compete in some cases was to buy goods for real money.

That being said the thing that impresses me most about GW is how balanced it is for full and part time players. You get no advantage (other than PvP practice) that would impact another person's ability to play the game. So I don't think you need to buy GW gold with real money to play the game but I don't feel people that do impact my ability to play the game they way I want to do it.

With a game like this, the only things that are really cheating are those things that violoate the EULA. Buying gold is forbidden in the EULA and is therefore cheating.

i couldnt agree more!

when i was playing diablo 2, i had so much fun beating the game, duying, struggling! when i found all the weapon editors i had even more fun... in 5 minutes i got to end of game (mephisto right?). then there was just no more challenge in the game. thats when i dropped it and went to enjoy the wounders of the "outside my house" places...

but then GW came around!

Fixed. When I used the item editors, I had endless hours of fun dueling with people from www.ladderhall.com. Those guys were truely amazing.
